Intermediate Swim Programme

The Intermediate Swim Programme at Penguin Swim School is ideal for swimmers who have mastered basic strokes and breath control. Following the globally recognised SSI (Scuba Schools International) swim syllabus, this level focuses on building freestyle endurance, mastering flip turns, and introducing competitive backstroke. These premium swim lessons in Singapore are perfect for children looking to refine their technique and swim efficiently over longer distances.

Intermediate I (Stroke Refinement)

Prerequisites: Swim 12 metres freestyle with rollover breathing, elementary backstroke 12 metres

Parent Participation: Not required

Overview:

Intermediate I transitions swimmers from basic freestyle to bent-arm recovery and bilateral breathing. Students learn competitive turns, improve endurance, and are introduced to backstroke and treading water — preparing them for more advanced stroke work.

Key Highlights:

  • Freestyle with bent-arm recovery and bilateral breathing
  • Zipper and tagging arm drills without equipment
  • Introduction to somersaults and freestyle flip turns
  • Back glide in streamline and elementary backstroke up to 12 metres
  • Treading up to 2 minutes

Final Goals:

  • Freestyle 25 metres with bilateral breathing and flip turns
  • Demonstrate basic backstroke and confident treading

Intermediate II (Stroke Mastery)

Prerequisites: Freestyle 25 metres with flip turns, competitive backstroke 25 metres

Parent Participation: Not required

Overview:

Intermediate II builds endurance and introduces stroke-specific techniques for backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Students develop competitive flip turns, racing starts, and explore early medley training — creating a well-rounded swimmer ready for advanced training or competitive entry.

  • Competitive backstroke drills and flip turn mastery
  • Breaststroke arm and whip kick coordination
  • Butterfly drills using fins and baton tools
  • Dolphin kick techniques in streamline and on back
  • Individual Medley (IM) drills: fly, back, breast, free

  • Swim 25 metres each of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke
  • Complete a 50-metre Individual Medley (IM) without disqualification
  • Demonstrate strong technique across all four strokes
