Beginner Swim Programme

The Beginner Swim Programme at Penguin Swim School is designed for children aged 6 years and above who are ready to swim longer distances with more refined techniques. Structured according to the internationally recognised SSI (Scuba Schools International) swim syllabus, this programme focuses on freestyle, backstroke, breath control, and early breaststroke techniques. These premium swimming lessons in Singapore take place in private and condo pools or trusted partner venues.

Beginner I (Introductory Stage)

Prerequisites: None

Parent Participation: Not required

Overview:

Beginner I helps children become confident in the water by learning how to float, glide, and kick independently. We introduce the basics of freestyle arm strokes, streamline kicking, breath control, and safe water entry techniques.

Key Highlights:

  • 10-count face float and bubble blowing drills
  • Assisted back floats with kickboard or cheek-to-cheek method
  • Streamline kick using barbell and kickboard
  • Tagging arms and one-arm windmill drills
  • Basic wall grabs and entry/exit techniques

Final Goals:

  • Swim 6 metres using windmill arms
  • Perform independent rollover breathing
  • Demonstrate 10-count independent back float

Beginner II (Development Stage)

Prerequisites: Swim 6 metres with windmill arms, independent rollover breath & back float

Parent Participation: Not required

Overview:

Beginner II strengthens freestyle and introduces proper streamline techniques. Students build endurance, learn back gliding with streamlined arms, practise whip kick for breaststroke readiness, and continue refining breath control.

Key Highlights:

  • Streamline kick and back glide up to 12 metres
  • Windmill arm drills up to 9 metres
  • Whip kick drills using turtles or noodles
  • Elementary backstroke arm introduction
  • Treading and kneeling dives

Final Goals:

  • Swim 12 metres with windmill arms and independent breathing
  • Perform back glide and whip kick with good body control

Beginner III (Advanced Beginner Stage)

Prerequisites: Swim 12 metres freestyle with breathing and backstroke basics

Parent Participation: Not required

Overview:

This stage builds on freestyle endurance, rollover breathing, and backstroke. Learners also begin full breaststroke coordination and butterfly kick foundations, preparing them for intermediate-level training

Key Highlights:

  • Independent windmill arms with rollover breathing up to 12 metres
  • Elementary backstroke and back glide drills up to 6 metres
  • Breaststroke: pull-buoy arm drills, whip kick coordination
  • Dolphin kick fundamentals and streamline practice
  • Standing dives with streamline 10-count entry

Final Goals:

  • Swim 12 metres freestyle with rollover breath and stroke continuation
  • Demonstrate elementary backstroke 12 metres
  • Perform back glide and whip kick with technique accuracy
